Lesson 10 of 13

The Husband's Service: Giving Love through Sacrifice

The chapter presents the Marry phase as a time when husband and wife serve one another, live out their commitments, and build a home together. Using Christ's love for the church as the pattern, the author describes the husband as head, foundation, provider, protector, and peacemaker. His service requires self-sacrifice, understanding, gentleness, mercy, and continued care for his wife's trust.

What you will learn

  • Identify the five husband roles described in the chapter.
  • Explain how Christ's sacrificial love models the husband's service.
  • Apply gentleness, reassurance, and mercy to family challenges.

Key concepts

Head through Sacrifice

The author presents the husband as the home's primary spiritual influence, responsible for leading in obedience and demonstrating self-giving love. He should honor his wife, live with understanding, and apologize when he has failed.

Foundation and Stability

As Christ brings stability, vision, and direction to the church, the husband is called to bring these qualities to his family. The chapter describes him as an anchor who helps bring calm through facts and truth during a crisis.

Provision through Giving

The chapter presents the husband's labor and sharing of resources as a picture of God's giving to the church. While describing the husband as the intended primary provider, it acknowledges circumstances in which the wife is the primary breadwinner and emphasizes God's grace.

Protection and Trust

The husband is called to stand for his wife and family in danger and uncertainty and to provide spiritual protection. Protecting his wife's trust requires ongoing care and attention, especially when she expresses that his actions threaten that trust.

Peacemaking and Mercy

Following Jesus as the Prince of Peace, the husband should make home a place of listening, safety, and rest. Even when angry or feeling disrespected, he is to respond with patience, tender words, and mercy rather than harshness.
